Remarks : winter blooming, The first mention of this cultivar is in The Gardener’s Chronicle from the year 1854. It describes the cultivar as ‘Dominiana’ which is the original and historically correct name. The cultivar is named after the foreman of the Veitch nursery in Exeter, England. The foreman was called Mr. Dominy. In later publications we find the name ‘Dominyana’ and nowadays both names are used interchangeably. As far as the ancestry is concerned, there is a lack of clarity. In The Gardener’s Chronicle the parentage is shown on 3 different pages in 3 different ways. This makes it unclear whether Dominiana is an interspecies cross or a cross between cultivars or a cross between a species and a cultivar. In his ‘The Checklist of Species, Hybrids and Cultivars of the Genus Fuchsia’ Boullemier describes ‘Dominyana’ (his notation) as ‘one of the very first hybrids of F. denticulata’ and writes the parentage down as F. denticulata x F.macrostigma. That would mean Boullemier was more inclined to think Dominyana was an interspecies hybrid. He clearly interpreted the historical confusing notations of parentage as a cross between 2 species in which he then adapted F. serratifolia to the later accepted name F. denticulata and F. spectabilis to the later accepted name F. macrostigma.
